Welcome to this class! Animation is an art form that has been around for over 150 years. In the past decade it has become increasingly prominent in many fields, most noticeably in that of the entertainment industry. From 3D movies, video games and television commercials to scientific, military and corporate training uses, animated imagery is found everywhere. It is a rapidly growing and constantly changing field and includes people with backgrounds ranging from the visual arts to science and computer programming.
Course Description
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to teach students the basics of animation. Students learn how to plot, script, storyboard, present, and create animations using the principles of animation and basic techniques including staging, timing, mechanics and kinetics. Drawing skills, life drawing, storytelling, mechanics of motion and animation camera techniques will be an integral part of the course. The format of classroom instruction will be lecture, demonstration, individual and team-based projects, presentations and hands-on classroom work.
Also, this class will introduce students to the creation of animated imagery through various media. We will begin with simple traditional hand methods such as flip books and proceed through digital process such as Pencil software animations on the computer. A major portion of the course will involve learning to use Pencil animation software. Along the way we will examine the history of the moving image and the power and influence of animation and computer generated imagery in our contemporary culture.

Key Prerequisite Knowledge/Skills for Success in This Course:
• Students should have successfully completed the courses in Art I and Computer Skills & Careers here at the high school. Drawing and Digital Imaging courses are recommended but are not required.
Familiarity Level:
• Students should have some familiarity with the following but not required:
- -The Elements of Art and Principles of Design
-Basic understanding of working in a Mac computer environment - -Ability to generate creative characters and short story ideas
- -Interest and ability in drawing
-Basic understanding of working in a Mac computer environment
